LCL, less than container load, is ocean freight for consignments too small to fill a container. A consolidator combines several shippers’ cargo into one shared container, charging each by volume or weight. The container is stuffed and stripped at container freight stations at each end.
LCL trades cost for touchpoints: you pay only for the space used, typically per cubic metre, but your cargo is handled more times, travels on the consolidator’s schedule, and shares a box with strangers’ freight. Pricing usually applies a weight-or-measure rule, whichever yields more revenue.
The extra stages are structural: origin CFS stuffing, ocean leg, destination CFS stripping, then availability for pick-up. Each stage adds time and a place where delay can occur, and one problematic consignment in the box, say a customs hold, can slow everyone’s.

Below roughly half a container’s capacity the per-cubic-metre price usually wins; near full utilisation, FCL wins on both price and handling. The crossover varies by lane, so quote both when volumes sit in between.
