A terminal operating system, or TOS, is the software that runs a container terminal: planning vessel stowage and crane sequences, assigning yard positions, orchestrating gate transactions, and recording every container move. Most tracking events at a port originate as TOS records.
The TOS is the terminal’s brain: it decides where each box stacks (balancing retrieval order, weight, and reefer plugs), schedules equipment, and processes truck visits. Its records feed customs systems, carrier systems, and appointment platforms.
For data consumers the TOS matters as provenance: discharge, yard, and gate events are TOS facts relayed onward by carriers, sometimes with delay or translation loss. When a carrier’s tracking lags reality, the underlying TOS event usually existed first. Terminals run different TOS products with different codes and update rhythms, which is a large part of why the same physical move can read differently across carrier feeds until someone normalises it.
Every terminal-side milestone on a tracked container, discharge, available, gate-out, began life in a TOS.
