A SCAC, the Standard Carrier Alpha Code, is a two-to-four-letter code identifying a transport carrier, assigned by the US National Motor Freight Traffic Association. Ocean examples include MAEU for Maersk and MSCU for MSC. US customs and EDI systems use SCACs to identify carriers unambiguously.
SCACs matter most where American systems are involved: AMS manifest filings, ISF submissions, and X12 EDI messages such as the 315 status message all key the carrier by SCAC. NVOCCs filing their own manifests have their own codes.
Confusingly, a carrier’s SCAC can resemble a container prefix (MSCU is both MSC’s SCAC and its box prefix), but they are separate registries with separate purposes: one names the carrier in filings, the other marks equipment ownership.
In tracking data, the SCAC is how a US-flavoured feed says which line is responsible for an event, and TrackingMCP maps SCACs to its carrier directory so references route to the right source. If you know only the SCAC, the carrier index resolves it to a tracking page, for example Hapag-Lloyd for HLCU.

Any carrier participating in US trades or US-centric EDI needs one, so all major ocean lines hold SCACs. Purely regional operators outside US commerce may not.
On US customs filings (AMS, ISF, ACE), in EDI message envelopes and status feeds, and in rail and truck interchange data. It identifies the carrier entity, not any specific vessel or container.
